*Aakash EduTV Sees Its Subscribers Base Soar During Pandemic Amid Widening Digital Divide*

 • Active subscribers base of Aakash EduTV increased by 66%, and new subscribers by 44% since April, 2021.

• Its success points to the fact that educational TV channels can be a more viable option for remote learning in India where only about 24% of Indian households have any internet access at home (National Sample Survey’s Report on Education 2017-2018), and only 8.5% of school students were able to access the internet for remote learning in the past year, according to a UNICEF’s 2021 report.

New Delhi, June 29, 2021: Education may have gone online during the pandemic. But not every student has access to it, thanks to the wide digital divide in India, where over two-thirds of the households do not have any access to the internet. Interestingly, what comes to the aid of the students now is the humble television seeing the soaring subscribers base of Aakash EduTV, an education TV available on Airtel DTH, dedicated to coaching students for school exams and medical and engineering entrance exams.

Launched by Aakash Educational Services Limited (AESL), the national leader in test preparatory services, in October 2020, Aakash EduTV has seen a 66% and 44% growth in active subscribers and new subscribers base, respectively, since April 2021.

Aakash EduTV offers live lectures, recorded live lectures for revision, doubt clearance, motivational lectures, NEET and JEE tips and tricks, previous paper discussions, among others, proving to be a lifeline for school students from Class 9 and for those who prepare for medical and engineering entrance exams. Aakash EduTV also offers career counselling programs - all at a cost of Rs 8.23 per day.

Aakash EduTV’s subscribers base is expected to increase multifold as over 18 crore households (out of the total 25 crore households) already have a TV, and, as per a 2020 report of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, DTH broadcasting, which accounts for 37% of total television subscribers in India, is fast expanding. In stark contrast, the existing digital divide means that only 25% of Indian households have any access to the internet.

And as the pandemic continues to impact the incomes of a vast majority of the households, the digital gap could become wider in the near future, making online education unviable for most students. This perspective is shared by UNICEF’s 2021 report, titled COVID-19 and School Closure: One Year of Education Disruption, which estimated that only 8.5% of school students have any access to the internet in India in the past year.

Commenting about Aakash EduTV’s phenomenal growth, and the driving factors, Mr. Aakash Chaudhry, Managing Director, Aakash Educational Services Limited, said, “As a fallout of the pandemic, over 15 lakh schools face closure, and about 28 crore students from pre, primary to secondary levels are out of touch with classroom education. Though online education is a very good solution, it cannot be an equitable one. We know students from economically disadvantaged families struggle with access to online learning. Hence, we launched Aakash EduTV a year ago, targeting especially the students who lack any access to the internet, and who are at the risk of being left behind. With Aakash EduTV, students can attend classes without an active internet connection. We are happy that EduTV is helping millions of students access high-quality educational content for their school exams and for helping them prepare for medical and engineering entrance exams.”

He added that there is a big chasm between people who are digitally connected and who are not, across the country, and between rural and urban areas; rich and poor, boys and girls.

In the poorest income group, only 2% have a computer as well as internet, only 3% have a computer, and 10% any digital device with internet, according to the National Sample Survey on social consumption of education (2017-2018). There are gender factors too - only 33% of the internet users are women. Surveys show that boys are given priority over girls in online studies due to lack of a computer or adequate number of mobile devices at home. Only half of those having internet access have basic broadband speed of 512 kbps or more, and an equal percentage of the users face issues related to poor connection and signal strength.

Aakash Institute also provides quality study material at a very nominal price at the student’s doorstep, through its Distance Learning Program (DLP). The program is ideal for students who cannot attend regular classroom sessions due to remote locations. Thousands of students have cracked the tough exams like NEET, JEE (Main & Advanced) and other State Engineering Entrance Exams with the help of DLP study materials.

*PayPoint launches Micro-ATMs to fill banking gap in North East India*

 • Advanced and portable Micro-ATMs offer all conventional ATM facilities in unbanked areas

• These can instantly deliver cash through local retail shops and outlets

Mumbai, 29th June 2021: Bringing primary banking services to the under-served and under-banked parts of the country, PayPoint India has launched a series of 'Micro-ATMs' (m-ATMs) in the thriving North-East India. The topography of India's North-Eastern states is traditionally deprived of elemental banking services, mainly ATM facilities, for long. Further, the hilly terrain often strains the connectivity, leading to inconsistent and incomplete banking transactions.

The m-ATMs, a mini version of the large ATMs, can be deployed in rural areas from where people travel long distances just to access the nearest ATM or a bank. The handheld machines can be set up at local Kirana shops and use the same cash box of these shops, keeping the cash flow consistent and available at all times. As per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data, there are only 6,183 ATMs available for 1.35 crore operative debit cardholders in the North Eastern region.

Beyond the convenience, m-ATMs are also an ideal backup and a pivotal resource for enabling essential cash transactions when the bigger ATMs run dry. They can be easily paired with a mobile or laptop for instant delivery of cash through retail shops.

PayPoint has already deployed around 900 m-ATMs in the North East region during a pilot program and plans to increase it to about 6,000-7,000 by March 2022. The company is witnessing a growing demand for m-ATMs from the last-mile as large parts of the country continue to be a cash-driven economy.

"We believe that PayPoint m-ATMs will help bridge this critical gap and make banking accessible and effective for the people of North East by allowing them to carry out real-time financial transactions without any hindrance. Further, m-ATMs are more viable than conventional ATMs due to low infrastructure cost and operational efficiency through normal mobile connectivity," said Ketan Doshi, Managing Director of PayPoint India.

Advanced and portable m-ATMs with modern facilities like chip-reading provide all conventional ATM facilities such as accepting debit cards, making balance inquiries, generating a mini statement, and much more.

M-ATMs for Assam tea garden laborers:

Initially, PayPoint India has rolled out m-ATMs in Assam to cater to the needs of tea garden laborers. These workers face a huge problem withdrawing their monthly expenses due to the unavailability of ATMs or banks nearby. Assam has more than 841 registered tea gardens with ten lakhs plus laborers. These laborers get wages of Rs. 167 per day plus other Government support which is directly credited to their saving accounts. So, to curve down the demand for banking services, PayPoint has decided to deploy m-ATMs in major tea garden areas of the state.

*India’s consumer credit market projected to grow at a higher rate than most major economies worldwide, according to latest Experian-Invest India Credit Ecosystem Review report*

 • Rise of India’s affluent middle class and growth in the rural economy continues to alter consumer spending patterns and drive India’s consumption boom

• Rapid technological adoption has created acceptance for new financial tools, with India’s credit market evolving into a self-generating and self-sustaining one as traditionally conservative lenders increase their risk appetites amidst rising consumer creditworthiness

Mumbai, June 16, 2021: India’s credit ecosystem remains resilient despite the pandemic, as revealed in the latest joint report, “A Review of India’s Credit Ecosystem” by Experian, the world’s leading global information services company, and Invest India, the national agency for investment and facilitation.

The report “A Review of India’s Credit Ecosystem” highlights several key trends in the lending sector, notably, a key trend where India’s consumer credit market is projected to grow at a higher rate than most major economies globally. This will be driven by a shift in India’s demography, a burgeoning affluent middle class ramping up private consumption, as well as growth in rural populations, all catalysed by technology. Recognising gaps in the market for the unbanked and underserved populations, the report explores how NBFCs and fintechs have transformed the lending landscape to cater to the financial needs of these consumers. The report also highlights the regulatory environment supporting India's credit ecosystem throughout the pandemic.

The report’s data, which tracks India’s credit ecosystem from March 2017 to February 2021, highlights a V-shaped recovery across Indian markets, with a gradual and steady improvement in sourcing trends. New sourcing crossed the pre-COVID-19 level in October 2020; however, sourcing volumes declined from January 2021 onwards due to the second COVID-19 wave and lockdowns being imposed.

A remarkable recovery was observed across all unsecured credit products. Recovery of personal loans has been high in both low (<Rs 1 Lakh) and high (>Rs 5 Lakh) ticket size segments while the recovery in higher ticket size loans is also improving steadily. The credit portfolio has been resilient, in February 2021, growth stood at eight per cent year-on-year for the portfolio of key products, lower than the 13 per cent observed for March 2020. The pace of growth slowed down for all products, however, with unsecured products experiencing a faster year-on-year growth rate compared to secured loans.

Mr. Neeraj Dhawan, Managing Director of Experian India, says: “The behavioural shift in Indian population has been tremendous just over the last five years. Consumerism has been growing in the previously untapped semi-urban and rural regions as millennials become the main driving force of the mass market. Technological adaption is steep which has, in turn, created acceptance for new financial tools. The biggest beneficiary of this change is the credit market, which is evolving into a self-generating and self-sustaining one. In line with this trend, the risk appetite of traditionally conservative lenders is growing as the horizon of creditworthiness expands. With its array of innovative solutions that help businesses in credit evaluation, smarter lending decisions and safeguarding themselves and their customers from fraud, Experian is at the forefront and one of the main enablers of this shift.”

Mr. Deepak Bagla, Managing Director & CEO, Invest India, adds: “India is making giant strides in financial inclusion. The rise in the affluent middle class and growth in the rural economy is changing consumer spending patterns and driving the bulk of India’s consumption growth. Additionally, rapid technological advancements have further expedited the growth of the credit lending ecosystem. The report attempts to bring forward credible and practical information about the credit industry in these unprecedented times. This report which illustrates Experian and Invest India's shared commitment to advancing excellence in India's credit system.”

Mr. Saurabh Mishra, Joint Secretary, Department of Financial Services, and Mr. Rajendra Ratnoo, Joint Secretary, Department for Promotion of Industry & Internal Trade, joined Mr. Deepak Bagla at the launch of the report.

Key highlights of the report:

Demand for credit-fuelled consumption:

With India's financial industry evolving at an unprecedented rate, demand for credit in the country has also seen consistent growth over the years. The rise in the 'affluent middle class' and growth in the rural economy is changing consumer spending patterns and driving the bulk of India’s consumption growth. India’s domestic credit growth has averaged 15.1 per cent from March 2000 to March 2021, primarily driven by retail loans and increasing penetration of credit cards. The Indian consumer credit market continues to expand at a rate higher than most other major economies globally with 22 million Indian consumers applying for new credits every month.

Increase in the purchasing power of an average Indian:

India’s consumption expenditure is more than double of that in countries like Brazil. The private final consumption expenditure has been consistently rising over the past five years and has reached INR 123.1 Mn (USD 1.70 Mn) in 2020. India’s household debt has grown at an annualised rate of over 13 percent in the last five years.

A shift in the demographic profile of the consumer:

India is one of the world's youngest nations adding more working-age citizens every day. The new generation comprising of millennials and Gen-Z have better access to education, employment, and better incomes, leading them to break away from frugality and increased consumer spending. Along with the rise in income levels, consumers are spending on aspirational categories like lifestyle products, consumer durables, and jewellery. With India's rising affluence, domestic consumption in the last decade has also increased 3.5 times from INR 31 Tn (USD 0.42 Tn) to INR 110 Tn (USD 1.50 Tn).

Changing customer landscape – the rising role of fintech:

The most rapidly growing industry serving both consumers and businesses is fintech, who can be heralded as an innovation of the decade. When India’s financial services industry was once dominated by banks, fintechs created their own niche space by targeting customers from urban and rural regions who were rejected by banks due to lack of credit history or collateral. While introduce new innovative products, the fintech industry has also brought in the concept of ‘sachet packaging’ for easy access to financial products – available anytime, anywhere, and in any quantity. With rising customer expectations, the advent of e-commerce, and smartphone penetration, the Indian fintech ecosystem has grown manifold in the last few years.

- Helps users from across the country to seamlessly book slots at the nearest vaccination center

India's leading digital financial services platform Paytm today announced the launch of vaccination slot booking in addition to its Vaccine Finder service on the app. Paytm users can now search, discover & also book their vaccination slots for both Covaxin and Covishield at the nearest center through the Paytm app.

The service would help Indians seamlessly book vaccination slots and gain immunity, helping in fighting the ongoing pandemic.

In May as vaccination opened for all in India, the company had launched Vaccine Finder on the app, with advanced filtering options that helped the user generate leads for vaccine booking, including information such as the type of vaccine available and the fee charged for it. The company said that over the last several weeks Paytm users have checked for the availability of vaccination slots via Paytm.

With the slot booking option now available on the app, users across the country can successfully complete their vaccination process.

Paytm spokesperson said, "It is our endeavour to help India come out of this pandemic a lot stronger. Our vaccine finder will help citizens seamlessly book slots at the nearest center and get vaccinated.”

The service is one of the many measures that Paytm has undertaken as part of its Covid-19 relief measures. Under its #OxygenForLife initiative, Paytm Foundation has donated Oxygen concentrators and is also setting up Oxygen Plants in government hospitals across the country.
